I’m a Tom Cruise fan, especially of the Mission: Impossible series, but this movie falls flat and is as formulaic and cheesy as it comes. M:I3 and maybe event M:I2 gives it a run for its money. Exotic locals and superstar smiles can’t save the bad screenplay and directing.

Skip it, unless you’re on a romantic date and want a popcorn flick to watch.

A-Team

A-Team was stylish but altogether was one big mess– action scenes were as convoluted as the acting and screenwriting. I enjoyed Liam Neeson as General Hannibal but even he wasn’t able to save the whole movie. I thought the humor was half-baked at best.

Skip it.

Toy Story 3 (IMAX 3D)

Phenomenal movie making and screenwriting but a bit more intense than I anticipated (for kids at least)… still, undeniably one of the best movies made this year. Most of the characters are back, and the screenplay is sharply written with humor throughout.

Date Night (DVD)

Date Night attempts to be an action/rom-com but really doesn’t have enough of either– the humor was mediocre and I couldn’t really even tell if Steve Carrell and Tina Fey had the kind of on-screen chemistry I anticipated they would’ve had. I certainly think they ended on a sequel opportunity, but we’ll see. It’s a fun concept, and I see why they wanted to make this into a movie.

Skip it, there are better action/rom-com’s out there.. plus I’m looking forward to Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.. it looks quite good.

Unthinkable (DVD)

Unthinkable delves into an interesting concept– torture. However, I felt that this movie was half-hearted, too shallow, focuses on one setting for too long, and just didn’t feel “real” enough. However, the acting of Michael Sheen (you might know him from Frost/Nixon) was PHENOMENAL, especially since he’s a British actor portraying an American. Props.

Skip it.

Youth in Revolt (DVD)

Youth in Revolt certainly had memorable scenes and some fun humor but in the end was pretty boring and dry– Michael Cera is delightful but isn’t enough to make this a great movie by any means.

Skip it. I thought Juno and Superbad were way better.

Ip Man 2 (DVD)

I loved the first movie (it was a surprise movie with great action/fighting scenes) but this movie just didn’t have that originality. I felt that the action/fighting scenes were a bit too synthetic. However, the movie still gave me that sense of pride in being Chinese, and that was certainly all worth it in the end.

Hit it, especially if you’ve seen the first, which I highly recommend.

From Paris With Love (DVD)

From Paris With Love was nothing like Taken, which director Luc Besson also helmed– this movie was half-hearted, soulless, and confusing. John Travolta pays homage to his “Face-off” and “Pulp Fiction” characters but still doesn’t come off as memorable or endearing as his past roles. In the end, I honestly felt a little cheated.

Skip it, there are better action movies out there.

The Young Victoria (DVD)

The Young Victoria is a well-made romantic era-type movie, which I’m relieved doesn’t star Kiera Knightley. Emily Blunt is amazing as Queen Victoria, and production value is quite high (with producers such as Martin Scorcese and even the Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson). Not bad from a French director.

Hit it, especially if you time period-piece romantic movies.

Get Him To The Greek

Definitely has some memorable and ridiculously funny moments, but it’s overshadowed by a flurry of discordance and disorganization in the flow of the movie– plus, I just didn’t feel the right chemistry between the main actors. I noticed a ton of cameos and small roles from TV comedians but in the end, I wanted a lot more.

Skip it. And as you can predict, it’s really crass and raunchy… but “LOL” funny at times.
